Gagneraux lived and worked in Rome, but eventually left the city to escape anti-French violence sparked by revolution and war. He moved to Florence, painting this scene in 1794, the year before he died. The cameo shows a slender winged youth representing the'Genius' (or'spirit') of Peace singlehandedly halting the horses belonging to Mars, god of war in classical mythology. In the actual painting there are four war horses, but most cameo carvers of this scene depict only three. The horses rear up as Peace pulls on their reins (which are deliberately thread-like and almost invisible in the painting).

On the ground behind is an abandoned collection of arms - a cuirass, a shield, a helmet and a burning torch. The carving is highly detailed and dimensional, particularly the wild-looking horses with their excellent proportions and beautiful heads. There is a small light signature on the back but I cannot read it. The cameo is set as a brooch in an unhallmarked mount which tests as 9 carat gold. There is some solder on the back of the bezel top and bottom, including where a ring for a safety chain was added at some time.

The antique brooch fittings look original and fasten securely. There are a couple of faint lines in the shell near the top and the nose of the Genius is unfortunately chipped, but this is only really noticed close up and the carving is otherwise in very good condition for its age. The mount measures approximately 57mm x 48mm (2 1/4" x 1 7/8"). The item "LARGE VICTORIAN CARVED SHELL CAMEO GOLD BROOCH PEACE HALTING THE HORSES OF WAR" is in sale since Monday, April 5, 2021.
