Victorian 14k Gold Hand Carved Cameo of Alexander the Great with Chariot. Presented is an elegant antique Victorian 14 karat gold cameo pin or brooch. This piece dates to around the 1850s-1880s and is likely of American make. The pin is oval in form, set with a stunningly detailed hand carved cameo scene of a Greek chariot. The chariot is pulled by four energetic horses, as Nike, Goddess of Victory holds the reins, with Alexander the Great at her side.
The scene is after a famous 1812 frieze by Bertel Thorvaldsen, called Alexander the Great's Triumphal Entry into Babylon and this carving certainly does the original subject justice. The frame of the cameo features a design of ivy leaves and vines, interwoven with ropetwist ribbon. The leaves are nicely hand engraved and textured. The pin has a lever catch style safety clasp. The pin is in great condition. The cameo is in good shape overall; it has a couple of little flakes or nibbles on the back side, but the front has no chips, no cracks, and no losses to the design. The clasp, though itself likely antique, is a more modern replacement, as this pin likely originally had a simple C style clasp.
The current clasp functions well and closes securely. The pin is stamped and guaranteed 14k on the clasp. The entirety of the pin, including the frame and the applied decoration around the frame, has been nitric acid tested and is guaranteed 14 karat gold. The pin measures about 2 1/8 inches by 1 3/4 inches.
The pin weighs 14.0 grams. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution. The item "Victorian 14k Gold Hand Carved Cameo of Alexander the Great with Chariot" is in sale since Monday, December 14, 2020.
