Antique Victorian 18K Yellow Gold Rectangular Carved Shell Cameo Ring

An antique, yellow gold, and shell cameo ring, comprising one carved panel of shell, set in 18 karat yellow gold, to an 18 karat yellow gold band. This striking cameo ring depicts a classical maiden, statuesque, stepping forward with her robes billowing around her in the wind. The cameo is beautifully carved, making wonderful use of the different coloured layers of shell, to present the perhaps Grecian maiden in pearly white, and the background in a warm coral tone. The lozenge shaped panel of shell is held in a statement claw setting, with 3 claws to each side, and 2 to the top and bottom. The geometric shoulders of the ring taper to a band of reeded 18 karat yellow gold.

The cameo is in excellent condition, the band of the ring shows evidence of resizing at the back, however, this does not affect wearability. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. The head of the ring measures 18mm high and 9mm wide. The band measures 2.5mm wide at the back. Cameo panel measurements, estimated: 17mm x 7.5mm x 3mm. Ring size: UK - R. Hallmarks: stamped'18ct' (18 karat gold), tests as 18 karat gold, circa 1870.
