Presented is a beautiful Victorian 18 karat gold and carnelian locket. This piece dates to around the 1830s-1870s, and is likely of American make. The locket is set with a lovely piece of rich red carnelian, fabulously hand carved with an intaglio design of a classical Greco-Roman profile, showing a stately man with a curly beard, perhaps Zeus. The carving is very well done and detailed, perfectly in the Renaissance Revival or Ancient Revival style of the time. The back of the locket comes off, so the locket could hold a photo, lock of hair, etc.

This piece is in great condition. The carnelian is in great shape, well set with no chips. The locket is not stamped or hallmarked, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be 18 karat gold. The locket is about 1 3/4 inches long, including the loop/bail at the top.
