The term cameo as it related to jewelry can refer to either the visual theme of a jewelry object or the technique used to carve glass, coral, shell, or stone such as onyx or agate. Cameos have a history dating back to ancient Rome.
Classical themes consisted of semi profiled individuals in Greek or Roman attire. The cameo technique is the method of carving an engraved gem or item featuring a raised "positive" relief image. Often, but not always, this technique used a contrasting color to the background. Carved cameos have enjoyed periodic revivals, especially in the mid 18th century when they became popular souvenirs among the middle class when touring Europe especially Italy.
